Blackberry safe in India, at least for next 60 Days

Today, was the deadline given to RIM by the Indian government, as RIM was requested to offer a way to the security officials to intercept communications over BlackBerry services or else the services would be banned.

Now, the Department of Telecommunications, after a meeting with RIM has decided that it will test the proposed monitoring solution for the next 60 days. This new solution is aimed at providing the officials with access to consumer BlackBerry messenger data as well as enterprise eMail services. Apparently, the suggested solution seems to be that emails from mail servers will be decrypted and forwarded to service providers and the authorities will then be able to access the information.

Increasing security risks is one of the main reasons for such a step and I agree with the government here as the country has been facing terrorist threats since quite some time and if at all something helps, why not? Also, RIM had to come up with a solution as they cannot neglect such a huge market of enterprise users. As I am an Indian, I have seen a Blackberry in the hands of most of the enterprise crowd and it is very obvious that RIM has a huge pool of customers in the country.

Now it looks like everything will soon be sorted and there is nothing much to worry about. But it is, now time for GMail and Skype.

By the way, Nokia also setting up enterprise eMail servers for Indian consumers.
